Walsh, a Catholic University of Distinction, is well known for its outstanding academic facilities, chapel, residence halls and unique educational programs. Over the last fifteen years, Walsh has seen an 80 percent growth in student enrollment; they soon discovered that their student capacity was growing too fast for their wireless network to keep up, and they needed to clear up the bottleneck. The Office of IT quickly found that their Cisco, controller-based wireless network was a significant contributing factor and could not maintain adequate throughput for the growing number of devices connecting to it. More importantly, they began to see that students and faculty were unable to stay connected at all.
Brian Greenwell, Walsh University CIO, knew that a move to the cloud made the most sense in terms of budget and scalability, but they couldn’t lose the features they needed to support a growing network. In particular, the issue of network security was still a primary concern. That’s when it came time for Rick Seivert, Network Administrator for Walsh University, to begin his search. After evaluating Cisco Meraki, Aruba, Aerohive and Ruckus, Rick was introduced to Mojo Networks and knew he had found the winning solution. For their first rollout, Rick and his team installed the Mojo W-68 access point, an 802.11ac wall mounted device in student residence halls, and opted for the more robust C-120 and C-130 802.11ac Wave 2 access points in common areas that experience higher traffic. For Rick, the cherry on top was that the deployment was so intuitive and seamless, it only took six weeks to be fully operational and the summer intern handled most of the physical installations without the need of professional support.
