How the iOS Telugu bug impacts WiFi

Telugu bug impacting WiFi

The latest Apple bug, in which one Telugu character can crash a user's Messages app on any iOS device, also affects WiFi networks.

If a malicious user creates a WiFi network with the specific Telugu character in the SSID (network name), it crashes the WiFi app (Settings --> WiFi) on iPhones, iPads, and other iOS devices. In our testing, it also renders the menu bar WiFi settings unusable on Macbook laptops.

This can potentially cause a Denial of Service (DOS) attack where no users can access WiFi settings on their Apple devices in the vicinity.
Apple has stated in the past few hours that they are already working on a fix and they expect to have it available in the next few days. Users are highly encouraged to install the new iOS software as soon as it's available.
